At a time when media and information literacy (MIL) is being taught… at home, its role in combating fake news is essential. Whether in the media or instant messaging, fake news about the coronavirus is circulating a lot.

Coronavirus misinformation may be contributing to a worsening pandemic. Let’s exercise our critical thinking in the face of media coverage that produces a hypnotic effect as strong as that experienced during September 11, 2001.

Media and information literacy allows us to acquire a repertoire of “barrier gestures” and to question the impact of this pandemic on our common digital public space.

Typology of fake news
Fake news is a threat to the integrity of information: opinion vs. fact, manipulation of minds vs. collective intelligence... Fake news is also a threat to democratic societies (integrity of elections, political interference by foreign third parties, etc.).

The coronavirus does not deny these threats. And, in fact, the systemic pattern of information disorders works in the case of the coronavirus and can be useful to identify the types of fake news as well as the actors and their motivations in this specific case of “liquid fear” as Zygmunt Bauman would say .
