Startups in Germany presented their business idea an average of 121 times last year
Large startups pitch significantly more often than small
Pitching is most often done in front of potential customers, and least often in front of juries
Whether in front of the jury for the Founders' Prize, potential customers or business partners, or interested investors - part of the startup life is presenting your business idea. And presenting it convincingly - and very, very often. On average, startups in Germany pitched 121 times last year.
This means that there was a pitch every other working day. This is the result of america gambling data a survey of more than 300 startups commissioned by the digital association Bitkom. The rule is: the larger the startup, the more often it pitches. Startups with 1 to 3 employees had an average of 44 pitches in 2018, with 4 to 9 employees it was 75 pitches, with 10 to 19 employees it was 103 pitches and larger startups with 20 or more employees pitched 260 times a year, which is an average of once per working day.
“Startup founders not only have to have an innovative business idea, rely on the latest technologies and find the right employees, they also have to sell themselves and their startup practically every day,” says Jenny Boldt, Head of Startups at Bitkom.
Startups most frequently pitch to potential customers (77 times per year). This is followed at a considerable distance by investor pitches (21 times) and pitches to potential business partners (17 times). On average, pitches are made to competition juries twice a year, and other pitches take place four times a year.
There are big differences between small and large startups, especially when it comes to pitches to potential customers, business partners and investors. While small startups with 1 to 3 employees only pitch to customers 29 times, large startups with 20 or more employees pitch 206 times.
Smaller startups pitch on average 7 times a year to business partners and only 3 times to investors, while large startups present themselves 29 times a year to potential business partners and 17 times to investors.
