TO REMEMBER THIS WEEK:
Concentration in television is accelerating – Whether in the United States with AT&T and Discovery in discussions to merge their media branches or in France with TF1 which will merge with the M6 group , the audiovisual world is in turmoil. On the American side, the stated ambition is to create a new streaming giant composed of WarnerMedia and Discovery . Some also see it as an opportunity for the old hands of television to regain power in this increasingly competitive sector. On the French side, not only will the merger of TF1 and M6 accelerate the upheaval of the French audiovisual landscape , but ambitions are also directed towards digital to compete with Netflix, Disney+ or Amazon. The latter would even be ready to buy MGM for the modest sum of 9 billion dollars …
Audio streaming shows its teeth - Cascade of announcements this week with Apple announcing better sound for Apple Music and this, for free . There will be a choice of sound quality for all subscribers of the platform. In the same vein, Amazon unveils Amazon Music HD which will also offer studio sound to its subscribers at no extra cost . We will note the absence of Spotify on this segment of audio quality accessible to all, but the Swedish brand should follow very soon in front of the releases of its competitors. In the meantime, it is first offering a series of virtual concerts . Spotify must also digest Deezer's poker move which allows users to listen to music offline via its application on Apple Watch .
The flight of Chinese CEOs – Beijing has not finished scaring the giants of Chinese tech. After the torpedoing of Jack Ma’s empire and the departure of Colin Huang from Pinduoduo , another big boss of Chinese Big Tech is retreating . Zhang Yiming, founder and CEO of ByteDance, announced his retirement from his position as executive director within six months . Following his departure, Liang Rubo (currently director of human resources) will take over the leadership of TikTok’s parent company . This announcement comes after months of tougher regulations and financial sanctions imposed by the Chinese government – but also in a climate of mistrust of BATX in the West .
