Do you know what the English certificates and driving licences have in common? In both cases you need to have at least a B1 level. Of course, no one is going to fine you for not having a B1 level in English, but you could miss out on thailand phone number list opportunities if you don't have one. Let's remember what the main English certificates are and what they are for.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
Organized by the Educational Testing Service , a non-profit organization in the United States, these are the oldest certificates in existence. According to their website, they are accepted by more than 9,000 university institutions in more than 130 countries around the world. In practice, this means that anyone who wants to go to study in the United States or Canada must obtain one. In other countries, preferences vary.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
These exams are organised by the British Council, IAP Australia and Cambridge University (although the latter has its own certificates, which we discuss below). This organisation also claims that its certificates are accepted by over 9,000 university institutions worldwide and are also the only certificates accepted in all countries that require a certain level of English from their immigrants. British universities usually opt for these.

Both TOEFL and IELTS are the types of certificates that universities require to prove a good level of English – normally, the equivalent of a B1 or B2, as a minimum). Choosing one or the other will depend on what the centre requires, so it is advisable to find out before rushing in.
