English words that aren't English (and their authentic translations)

In our language we hear English words every day that we happily incorporate into our vocabulary. Did you know that many of these words were invented by us Spaniards and do not exist in English?


Some of these words are so ingrained in Spanish that we don't even think about where they come from. On many occasions, it is the media itself that spreads these words, making us believe that they are correct. The problem can come if we try to translate them into English without further ado, thinking that is where they come from!



Words ending in -ing that are useful for everything
The first one was probably “footing ”, but then there were others, like “puenting ”. We are so daring that we can put it on any word and we are happy with it. Footing , has a certain logic, although the term in English is “jogging ”, which has nothing to do with it. The “ puenting ” monstrosity , however, is unforgivable. If “puente” in English is “bridge ”, where did we get it from? By the way, the term in English is “bungee jumping” .



Sports neologism
Every now and then, new words appear in the sports section of the news that become trendy and everyone starts using them. One of those words was crack , which, although it exists in English, does not have the positive connotation that it has when we use it in Spanish. On the contrary, crack , in English means to break or crack and is also used to refer to a drug. Something similar happens with top , which, although it means “up” or “from the top,” is not used in English as we do in Spanish to refer to a great player…or whatever.

“Tennis” is perhaps one of the oldest Spanglish inventions in our country. This word is used in some areas of Spain to refer to sports shoes, even if they are not for playing tennis. The word may have evolved from the English tennis shoes , but tennis is never used in English on its own to refer to a type of footwear.
