The prepositions at, in and on: exercises to practice

Prepositions don't always follow logic and we often need to learn them by heart. That's why today we bring you some exercises so you can practice them in context. Before you start, review the general rules for using the prepositions at , in and on . Once you've got it down, try doing the exercises we suggest, look for the answers at the end and correct your mistakes . Good luck!

It is used to indicate position or place in certain cases:

I was at my friend's house when it happened.

It is one of the possible options to indicate where someone works or carries out an activity:

She works at a local newspaper.
They studied at Yale. — They studied at Yale.
She's a software developer at Microsoft .
To indicate presence in certain group activities:

For addresses:

For hours:

On
Indicates position on a surface:

Put it on the ground .
The books are on the table.
It is used to refer to certain types of transport:

She's on the bus . — She's on the bus.
The signal is really bad on the train. — There is very bad coverage on the train.
In
For locations in a larger area:

It must be somewhere in the kitchen. — It must be somewhere in the kitchen.
The shop is in Barcelona. — The store is in Barcelona.
For places if we conceive them as a physical site and not as an institution:

There are no students in that school yet. — There are no students in that school yet.
But be careful, there are exceptions to these uses:

He was in hospital after the accident. — He was in the hospital after the accident.
