The Ishikawa diagram, popularly known as the “fishbone” diagram, is widely recognized as a powerful quality management tool for business processes. The method was created by Japanese quality management specialist Kaoru Ishikawa in the 1950s as a complement to traditional quality control methods.

The name "fishbone" is explained by the external similarity of the graph structure to the skeleton of a fish. The "fishbone diagram" (or Ishikawa diagram) has three underlying elements:
Head
The diagram starts with the "head of the fish", where the problem to be solved is located. From this point, the branches of the diagram start.
Fish spine
