illawarriors u20 logoOn the 1st of March Illawarra Colts played the first of three trials leading into the Country Championship. The weather conditions were extremely wet, with continued rain all day and at times visibility was restricted.
The Illawarriors played 25min Quarters against a mix of four teams from Parramatta Colts. The Illawarriors ran in 4 tries to 5, showing some excellent ball skills and some individual flare. The team played to the phone number library conditions in a tight and physical encounter. The forwards were effective at the set piece allowing the backline to execute their moves and exploit some weaknesses in the Parramatta defensive line. Jordan Decelis was excellent at the lineout, with tireless work around the park by Dyson McCurry. Despite the wet conditions David Sheridan provided some spark from fullback.
Parramatta was too strong in the last quarter and ran in some good tries against a tired Illawarriors team. The team showed great courage by putting in a solid defensive effort making Parramatta work for every meter. Head Coach Michael Solomons was very happy with the team, ‘the final defensive effort was an indication that the team does not give up and will serve the Illawarra district proudly’.
The trial served as a good indication of the player’s abilities and strengths. The players and coaching staff are now looking towards this Saturday’s trial against Penrith in Penrith. From here the squad will be finalised in advance of the trial against Campbelltown Harlequins.
Thanks to referees Fred Whiteman and Wayne Cusack for officiating on the day. In addition thanks to the Camden Rugby Club for hosting the day and allowing the match to proceed despite the conditions.
