Menus and interface get a makeover
What is also immediately noticeable is that the menus and interface of Facebook itself are getting a makeover. The blue bar at the top – where your notifications, messages and the links to your profile are now – becomes a search bar for the also recently introduced Graph Search . Facebook has now neatly combined all other functionalities in 1 bar on the left side. Links to your profile, events, frequently used apps and your friends with whom you are chatting in Facebook Messenger, all end up here.

2. Mobile first
The second thing that immediately stands out is that these changes are all multi-divice. Previously, the look & feel, experience and functionalities of the desktop, tablet and mobile apps of Facebook differed quite a bit. This was because the tablet and mobile apps were introduced much later than the desktop version. They were therefore never designed from the same starting point. With the renewed news feed, Facebook has approached this differently.

Chris Cox, vice president product at Facebook, nicely explained in his part of the presentation how the list to data mobile version actually served as a model for the design on all devices. In short: mobile first . With this, Facebook has created a consistent look & feel and interface across all devices.

A-New-Look-for-News-Feed

The third major innovation is the introduction of filters. One of the main criticisms of Facebook recently was that the news feed had become far too busy. By means of four handy predefined filters it is now possible to filter your news feed. You can filter by:

Friends: A feed of all the posts your friends share
Photos: A feed of only photos from your friends and the Pages you're a fan of.
Music: A feed of posts about the music you listen to
Following : a feed with the latest news from the pages you are a fan of and the (famous) people you follow .
So this filter is a really important change for both users and brands on Facebook. People can now choose to primarily view their friends' updates and ignore fan page updates.

4. Edgerank, Ads and Reach
As a marketer with a fan page on Facebook, you are probably wondering: what will this mean for the edgerank , advertisements and the reach of my postings? For now, you can rest assured that the renewal of the newsfeed is mainly a cosmetic intervention. Under the hood, everything remains the same. The visual changes to the newsfeed will not have a direct effect on the Facebook edgerank or the reach of your postings in the short term.

What the effect and impact of the filters on the reach of fan page postings will be in practice is not yet known. A positive point is that the advertisements on the right side will also get a visual makeover and a more prominent place. The advertisements in the news feed itself – such as sponsored reports and sponsored postings – will also get a more prominent place with these innovations.

I want it too!
Then unfortunately you will have to wait a little longer. Facebook has learned from the introductions of new functionalities in the past and will slowly roll out the renewed news feed, worldwide. First, a limited group of users will be given access so that Facebook can study their use of the renewed news feed and adjust it where necessary. Only then will the renewed news feed be rolled out worldwide.

You can already take a look at Facebook itself and sign up for that first group of users. The rest of the world will have to be patient for a while.

I'm very curious about your opinion about the renewed news feed!
