Privacy by design
The big data research paper Privacy, technology and the law (PDF) discusses the above confrontation in detail. Every organisation that deals with big data must know the ins and outs of privacy and data protection. This has not yet landed everywhere. If we are transparent and open about what we are doing, customers are given a clear choice to provide information or not, and we implement the Privacy by Design principle , then the three most important steps have been taken.
Along these lines, this note aims to contribute to a fundamental privacy awareness that shapes business practice as an information situation with an open visor for both customer and supplier.
One thing is crystal clear: anyone looking for the on and off switch for privacy will have a long search list to data ahead of them. It is much more important to choose the right direction, so that we can profit from big data across the board. What we need to be heading for is 'big data profit for everyone'. This can best be done by recognising the privacy issues, exposing them in detail and guiding them in all openness into accepted paths.
