“More than 2.5 million new users join Telegram every day, and earlier this year we surpassed 800 million monthly active users. We are thrilled and grateful, even though this massive growth also means spending more on storage and traffic to serve our users.
Fortunately, Telegram is super efficient when it comes to expenses, and we had a great start to monetization last year. While not yet profitable (which would be impossible to achieve in just the second year of monetization), Telegram is closer to profitability in absolute terms than its competitors like Twitter and Snap.
To fund Telegram’s continued growth until we break even, this week we issued approximately $270 million in Telegram bonds as a spin-off of our existing bonds. Once again, we were fortunate to have the participation of well-known funds with stellar reputations.
I personally purchased about a quarter of Telegram’s new bonds, investing tens of millions in Telegram’s growth. This is on top of the hundreds of millions I’ve spent over the past 10 years keeping Telegram running.
