Breakout session: Jonathan Phillips, Senior Manager, Digital Communications at Coca-Cola Enterprises

And then don't 'overreact' as MT: only then will internal social tools start working for themselves. What seems uncomfortable, later turns out to be the most valuable for the organization. The way you manage these environments is to integrate into them and thereby exert influence.

When asked by the audience how to convince management that it can really be of value to the organization, Semple comes up with the somewhat vague answer that it is better to ask for forgiveness than for permission. Because with the latter you give management the opportunity to say no. Look for the loopholes in the proverbial law and, here comes the metaphor: “ let the list to data Trojan mice go off and do their thing” .

People have positional power
People who have power don’t like to give it away. People have positional power . They have a hard time when they feel that power is taken away. That won’t change overnight. And if employees don’t want to cooperate, you either have to show them the consequences when they don’t use tools, or make sure there is no alternative.

And how do you make sure that a social intranet organizes itself and is used? By facilitating people, providing the mechanisms, and putting energy into it. You can't just sit back and let it happen. And as a manager you can't say anymore: 'my title is manager so I decide what happens'. You don't stop managing either. But the way you do it is different.

Oh, everyone knows Coca-Cola. And that the presentation about Coca-Cola's intranet was smooth, shiny, well-considered and not really exciting came as no surprise to me.
