Yay Mark, do something about this!
facebook-policeSo much for my message to the conscience and the mind of the entrepreneur. Because what is really the cause of all the Share & Win violence? In my opinion, we really have to point the finger at Facebook, which does not sufficiently comply with its own promotion policy. I myself (as a Facebook marketer) have only heard once of a page that has been removed by Facebook (and you?)!
If there were ten of them, I (even as an avid sidewalk cyclist) would be more on my guard and tell my clients that there is a substantial risk. At the moment, I really can't bring myself to say that.
But why doesn’t Facebook take action? That’s a question I can’t answer. Again, it damages the relationship between Facebook and the entrepreneurs who play by the rules, and it damages relevance for users who find the actions annoying. On the level 99+ balance beam that Facebook constantly walks between user relevance on the one hand and commercial interests on the other, you might expect this to be an excellent opportunity to kill two birds with one stone.
Tracking down a successful 'Like, Share and Win' campaign is not particularly difficult either. If Facebook were to have one employee per country browse through the 250 best-scoring (most shared) posts and pages one day a week, a large part of the campaigns could be tracked down and the organizers reprimanded. Even if they were to keep this up for 4 weeks, we would soon be rid of the phenomenon and everyone would act properly according to the terms and conditions and the same rules of the game.
Like, Share and Win a Facebook without Like, Share & Win
The lack of action from Facebook inspired me to, in addition to this article and the existing possibility to report cheating pages (via the page like button on the relevant fan page), also start a fun awareness campaign and send a signal to Facebook itself and all 'cheating' companies and parties involved. Of course in style and with a cute kitten (because yes, cats rule the internet ) fully optimized for extra virality!
