The pros and cons of debating via Twitter in a nutshell

Post by Bappy11 »

Some order
Twitter newspaper is presented to PechtoldHow do you still create some order? #Kennisdebat showed a moderated feed on the website. If you couldn't see the forest for the trees, you could follow a selection of tweets there. The planning of the debate included an hour 'break' between the different topics, but this turned out to be insufficient to really deal with the topics chronologically. The best tool that #kennisdebat used to deal with the tsunami of tweets, in my opinion, was the Twitter newspaper that appeared the germany telegram data same evening with a summary of tweets per topic and statement. The next morning, this newspaper was distributed in print at the Binnenhof.

Pros and cons

Advantages:
Easy to participate
Potentially many participants ( 1.3 million Twitter users in the Netherlands)
Suitable for putting topics on the public agenda
Attractive, relatively new form of debate
Disadvantages
There is no structure, making the debate difficult to follow
More than one proposition in a debate makes it confusing
Real discussion is largely absent
Twitter alone is not enough, a combination with other media is necessary
Strong line-up
#Kennisdebat is pleased with the result. Patricia Heerekop: “We managed to get a strong line-up of top people from business, science, politics and society, some of whom created a Twitter account especially for this debate. The total turnout was enormous.” She herself also indicates that the debate was sometimes difficult to follow. “We wanted many topics and many opinions, not necessarily just reactions to the statements. And the quality of the tweets was good, participants had really prepared themselves, they even had figures from research at hand. The Twitter newspaper afterwards showed the discussion line well.
