AI can do a lot, but not everything

Artificial intelligence is a key technology that will fundamentally change the economy and society. In the public debate, however, AI is often also attributed possibilities that lie far beyond what is technologically achievable in the foreseeable future. With a new publication series "AI: Science over Fiction", the digital association Bitkom wants to contribute to objectifying the debate and use selected examples to show what benefits AI can provide and where its limits lie.

"The ideas of artificial intelligence are often shaped by science fiction novels and films. This creates fear of an omnipotent artificial intelligence, and fear is always a bad advisor," says Bitkom President Achim Berg. "The aim of Bitkom's new publication series is to sharpen the view of AI and to focus on real application scenarios rather than imaginative utopias. Today, AI primarily opens up new possibilities for the automation of clearly defined tasks; in many other areas, AI is still in its infancy."

The first fact sheet in the "AI: Science over Fiction" australia gambling data series describes how AI can be used to detect epileptic seizures. This is important because epilepsy patients should carefully document their seizures so that the right medication can be selected and the dosage adjusted.

However, experience has shown that this is not done sufficiently, especially in the case of night-time seizures, so automated detection and documentation of seizures can significantly improve the quality of life of patients and also prevent accidents and even deaths. Pinar Bisgin from the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Engineering (ISST) describes the difficulties of detecting seizures using measurement data - especially blood pressure - and shows how machine learning has made this possible for each individual patient.
